Most children and adolescents require a SPORTS PARTICIPATION physical before their coaches will allow them to begin a season of sports at school. Besides making sure there are no real impediments for the child to play soccer, football, volleyball, etc, the sport physical is a way of seeing children for a wellness exam that they would not otherwise have (since their shots may be up to date).
During these visits we take the time to listen very carefully for heart murmurs or other abnormal cardiological findings. We also screen for asthma or exercise inducted asthma (EIA). Abnormal findings are further evaluated as a return visit usually with a referral to pediatric cardiology. Exercise induced asthma is easily treated by a family physician and unless there are other concerns we usually do not refer to a pediatric pulmonologist.
If you care paying cash for this exam, it is about $50.
